I am currently using the POE switches to power cams and touchscreens.
#Baystack 5520 serial port settings install
Yeah you may want to install the switch where it is not heard as that might be low on the WAF. You should also be able to see the power draw on a port to establish what it is your cameras are sucking up in power. With 48 ports of POE though you do want to be able to shut off or on some POE ports. The Nortel managed POE switch has a large power supply (or more than one) with meat and that is truly what matters. Thing about the little "el cheapo" switches is that they have little power supplies are are made more for 1-2 VOIP telephones rather than POE cameras.
If you are hitting switch with a lot of traffic it will be the backplane/cpu of the switch abends regardless of how many vlans you have. For example a VLAN doesn't really help other than isolating the traffic. You do not really need a managed switch for home automation. The higher end "el cheapo" little switches are made of metal and are heavier than their plastic counterparts such that they have a robust feel about them. It is still a cheap aXX Linksys switch but it cost more to rename it such that you pay for their logo. IE: folks used to buy Linksys mostly these days because of the name Cisco attached to it. They are and mostly sold because of the brand name and being carried by Best Buy who sells mostly to the average consumer wanting a network switch on demand (today?).
Like an 8 port switch with only 4 POE switches! type geared more for home type networks and they just seemed so expensive for what they were. That's why I bought a computer that was above and beyond the specs for Blue Iris.
#Baystack 5520 serial port settings upgrade
this is our house and we plan on living here the rest of our lives so I want to be able to add a camera when we see the need and not worry about weather we have to upgrade our equipment. But I didn't want to buy a small switch and outgrow it rapidly. If I have to change gears and look for something else I suppose I can always try selling this somewhere if need be and get something more my speed I guess. "Oh, you need this interface and it costs $1000.00!" That's the kind of luck I have. And I hope I have everything I need to be able to use this with my Blue Iris and POE cameras. I guess I will learn as I go, I just hope I didn't bite off more than I can chew so to speak. Like an 8 port switch with only 4 POE switches! Then I saw this and it seemed like a pretty good deal, but I don't have a clue what any of the "Managed" switch stuff is. I was researching the POE switches, the type geared more for home type networks and they just seemed so expensive for what they were.
